Dear Oxford English Dictionary,

On behalf of knitters in North America and the U.K., I humbly request that you add the word "Qiviut" to the OED. I realized it was missing when I tried to look up how to pronounce it, as the OED is my go-to resource for the English language. I do know that it is also known as the Arctic musk ox and its downy undercoat is highly prized by fiber enthusiasts more than cashmere. It costs approximately USD$45 for an ounce of qiviut yarn, and most knitters know it as "qiviut" rather than "Arctic musk ox" so it is a common word in our lexicon - and don't underestimate the knitters. We are legion, and sneaky.

I did later find this quote from to guide my pronunciation:
"Qiviut, this strange word pronounced ki - vee - ute, means down or underwool in the Eskimo language. In English it means specifically the soft greyish-brown underwool of the rare Arctic animals, the musk ox."

So please, I implore you, add this word to the OED. I've heard it in conversation no less than four times in the past five days. It is part of the living, breathing English that my knitter friends and I use effortlessly and often.

Thank you for your time,

Do you actually send out the letters you put on your blog, or is this just a blog? I've always wondered.

90% of the time they are actual letters that I send out.
