A Terribly Blurry Update

Day 4: v2.1

It looks so calm and peaceful, doesn't it?

What actually happened is I realized at the end of Day 3 that my gauge was 7sts/inch. That is a full 1 stitch smaller per inch than I had calculated my pattern on.

(For non-knitters who don't have a full grasp of the horrors of not getting gauge yet, this means that if Hubby's ankle is 9.5" and I figure out how many stitches I need on my needle, I will be about 1" too small because I figured it out using the wrong gauge.)

Now, as I'm still in the foot and the foot of a sock should be snug (and I've had Hubby try it on), I'm wasn't too worried about it. I recalculated to see how many more sts I needed on my needle (eight, if you're curious, I need eight more) and am increasing accordingly, so by the time I turn the heel I'll have the requisite stitches.

But here's the rub. My first stitch count allowed for a 9-stitch pattern repeat, so I threw in an 8x1 rib (non-knitter translation: 8 knit stitches and 1 purl stitch to make a 9-stitch pattern) on the top of the foot, intending to pick it up around the whole leg after the ankle. My newly recalculated stitch count was not divisible by nine, but rather by eight, and I was NOT going to rip back and reknit with a 7x1 rib.

Since I had enough stitches for three ribs on top, I had centered the middle rib to the top of the foot. I called that middle rib St 4 (Stitch 4) because 4 is more or less in the middle of 8. I then counted down to the right, 3, 2, 1, 8, 7, 6, 5, and 4. This right-hand St 4 was one stitch to the left of my original right-hand rib. I went back to the middle St 4 and counted up to the left 5, 6, 7, 8, 1, 2, 3, and 4. This left-hand St 4 was one stitch to the right of my original left-hand rib. I now had a plan.

With careful concentration I dropped all the column of purl stitches that made my original right-hand rib and picked them back up with a crochet hook as purl knit stitches (this removes the rib entirely and give you a smooth stockinette knitted surface). I then dropped the column of knit stitches directly to the left of the newly-erased rib, and picked those up as purl stitches, creating a new rib that was one stitch to the left of the old one, i.e. a rib located on St 4. I then repeated this on the left, adding a new rib on the right side of the old one.

Thus I was able to continue knitting with 7x1 rib without having to reknit the entire foot. Huzzah! Tonight I start the heel.

So I guess the ribbing in this case was NOT for "her pleasure"?

It looks quite phallic...
