Puerto Rico Photos

I am home, I am alive, the cats are pissed at us for having been gone a week.

I didn't give my presentation all in Spanish because I simply ran out of time, but I did give them bilingual instruction sheets and got to speak a lot of Spanish in general. My good accent got me into trouble because I was mistaken twice for a native speaker and I had to halt a torrent of Spanish with, "Ingles, por favor?" In fact, one of the UPR faculty cornered me at lunch and (politely) demanded an explanation of where I learned such good Spanish. One of the workshop team then piped up with, "She speaks Russian, too!" and I had to then list out every language I'd ever studied, etc.

Puerto Ricans speak Spanish the way the French speak French. Sure, you may write down whole words, but you only need to pronounce half the letters. WOW. My listening comprehension was WAY DOWN on this trip.

Interestingly, being back in Lexington I'm finding Mexican Spanish to be... sort of grating in comparison. Makes me wonder about Cuban Spanish. I think I'll watch Guantanamera again.

I also got outed by our workshop coordinator as being an extracurricular renegade crafter, so I had to show everyone the website and tell them about the book, etc. It was insanely strange.

In general, the people were awesome, the food was incredible, the views were gorgeous and I would totally move there if it weren't for the fact that it was 90º with a heat index of 105º and 85% or more humidity.
